Pinocchio – Black RAT Productions (Dec 11)  and Midsummer Festival Company, Dyffryn Gardens (May 08)

Adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s classic tale (lyrics by John Lovat). The show was attended by more than four thousand school children from Cardiff and The Vale of Glamorgan. (May 08). In Christmas 2011, the show was further abridged and adapted by Richard Tunley and performed by a professional cast of three with children’s chorus as a one hour Christmas show at The Gate Arts Centre (2011)

Wind in the Willows – Black RAT Productions

Music and lyrics for a new adaptation the classic book by Kenneth  Grahame. Christmas Show 2010 at The Gate, Cardiff.  Director – Richard Tunley

Orpheus Down Under – Unexpected Opera

Book and musical arrangements. A new adaptation and updating of Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld. Touring  extensively in the South East of England with the assistance of the Art Council of England throughout 2010 and 2011. Director and co-adaptor Lynn Binstock.

Animal Farm – Black Rat Productions

Composed incidental music and songs for this devised piece based on George Orwell’s classic book. Black RAT Summer School 2009 at the Weston Studio, Wales Millennium Centre. Director – Richard Tunley

The Barber of Savile Row – Unexpected Opera

Adaptation of Rossini’s opera The Barber of Seville. The piece retains much of Rossini’s original music and story structure but the piece is transported to Savile Row in the late 1950s. The production premiered at The Greenwich Theatre, and toured extensively in the South East of England throughout 2008 and 2009. Director Lynn Binstock (Spring 08)

Whistle Down the Wind and Joseph  – Bill Kenwright Ltd.

Auditioned and trained a choir of children to perform in Bill Kenwright’s touring productions at The New Theatre, Cardiff. (Oct.98, July 99 and Oct 2001)

 Assassins National Youth Theatre of Wales

Musical director of the National Youth Theatre of Wales culminating in a performance of this musical by Stephen Sondheim. Performed at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff and Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon. (July 94)

Dracula The Sherman Theatre Company

Composer and musical director of a new production of Bram Stoker’s classic tale commissioned by The Sherman Theatre Company. (Nov. 91)

A Man of Affairs – Instant Classics at Chapter Arts Centre

Composer and musical director of this musical which was subsequently shortlisted for The Vivian Ellis Prize for new musicals run by The Peforming Arts Society. (Sept. 99)

All So Stille – BBC National Chorus of Wales

Composer of a specially commissioned Christmas Carol performed at a Christmas Concert in St David’s Hall, Cardiff. The concert was broadcast on radio by the BBC (Dec. 96). 

Stars in Their Eyes – BBC Radio Four       

Composer and musical director of a new musical commissioned for Saturday Playhouse. Director Foz Allen. (Feb. 96)

Duchess of Malfi – BBC Radio Drama

Composer of incidental music for this play broadcast on Radio Three with Fiona Shaw and Adrian Dunbar. Director Alison Hindell. (Nov. 92)

LARGE-SCALE COMMUNITY PROJECTS

In addition to the credits below, I spent a year as Composer in Residence at Welsh National Opera (94-95).

The Elixir Project – Welsh National Opera

Composer and Musical Director of a specially commissioned piece of youth theatre run in conjunction with Welsh National Opera’s national tour of Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love. The piece was performed at the Sherman Theatre, Cardiff (February 2009)

Hear Our Voices – Art and Power

Based at a day centre for adults with learning disabilities in Bristol; I worked as a musical director on a number of related projects collating and rehearsing music written by members of the group. This included the creation of a twenty minute animated opera (loosely based on Puccini’s Turandot). This piece was also performed live at The Watershed and then The Theatre Royal in Bristol. (95-2000)

Dare – Made in Wales Theatre Company

Composer and musical director of this youth project. The piece was performed by teenagers in Aberdare at The Coliseum Theatre. Director Rebecca Gould. (July 98)

Song of the City of the Hills Boilerhouse Theatre Project

Composer and musical director of this community project. The project involved hundreds of adults and children from the area in all aspects of performance including singing, instrumental playing and composition. Director Iain Stuart Ferguson (April 96)

Rhondda Youth OperaWelsh National Opera

Composer and musical director of a project involving young people and giving them the opportunity to work with singers and staff from Welsh National Opera. Initially I wrote new piece for the group called Phantasia and later abridged Mozart’s The Magic Flute Director Robin Tebbutt.(94-95)

Kalaf’s Quest Welsh National Opera

Composer and musical director of a community opera loosely based on Puccini’s Turandot. In addition to a large cast of performers the production featured an orchestra of more than thirty players of youth players with each section led by musicians from the WNO orchestra. The project was launched as part of The Splott Opera in Cardiff and then repeated in Bristol with a new cast. (Dec.94 and March 95)

Cinderella – Welsh National Opera

Composer and musical director of ‘The Splott Opera’ part of WNO’s award winning Cinderella project.  It involved a cast and crew of more than two hundred of all ages and abilities at the Star Leisure in Cardiff. Director Iain Stuart Ferguson. (Dec. 93)

THEATRE IN EDUCATION

Between 1990  and 1996  I worked extensively as a composer, musical director and workshop leader for Gwent Theatre taking production into schools and performing in community venues. During this time I also wrote three small-scale touring musicals: Treason, After Hours and Deadline.  I have also worked as a composer and musical  director for Theatre Iolo, Spectacle Theatre, Coracle Theatre.
